China is a country of many firsts. From the majestic Forbidden City to the high-rises of Hong Kong to the more than 1.3 billion people within her borders, the country can never fall short of amazing things to do and see. However, Yangshuo County is first among equals in a country that has known greatness since its inception.

Yangshuo County is under the jurisdiction of Guilin City. Its seat of authority is located in Yangshuo Town. The idyllic town is surrounded by karst peaks and is accessible either by road from Guillin City or by boat on Li River. The town has slowly carved a niche for itself as a destination for those that love nature, especially the backpackers. Today, it is a popular resort town that hosts millions of local and international tourists annually.

One of the most popular activities here is rock climbing. The area has over 200 single-pitch bolted sport climbing routes. Amazingly, new multi-pitched routes are in their later stages of development and should be available soon. Among the most popular rock climbing crags in Yangshuo include; Moon Hill, Low Mountain, Twin Gates, Baby Frog, The Egg, Bamboo Grove and Wine Bottle Cliff.

Yangshuo have formed partnerships with Morehead Town in Kentucky, US and Rapid City in South Dakota, US to expand its activities. This has seen a large number of American rock climbing enthusiasts such as Paul Collis to visit Yangshuo.

Just to demonstrate how beautiful this region is, the picture on the 20-Yuan bill was taken at Li River in Yangshuo. The county also formed the backdrop of the popular 1993 video game - Doom.

Apart from rock climbing, tourists can also hike to the karst peaks, take boat rides on Li and Yulong Rivers, visit the caves and temples as well as enjoy some Chinese Cuisines in its laid back cafes and bars.

To get to Yangshuo, international visitors are served by the Guilin Liangjiang International Airport which is serviced by major airlines from Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen. It is cheaper to fly from Shenzhen. From the Airport, ensure that your hotel arranges your transport...most tourists will be overcharged by the taxi drivers. Alternatively, you can use a train from Shenzhen to Guilin from where you can take a bus - it will take you one and a half hours to reach Yangshuo. If you opt for a boat ride, be ready for delays. However, the views might be worth it.

Yangshuo is essentially a sample of what majority of Chinese regions are, only a little bit more beautiful. If you ever want to experience how life in the Chinese countryside feels, this is the place to be.
