One of China's seven ancient capitals, Luoyang is where you must be headed if you want to visit and be amazed by the Longmen Grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The city of Luoyang is home to very significant historical sites which is why it is known as one of the cradles of Chinese civilization. It is located on the central plains of China, and on the north side of Luo River. If you are interested in the history of China, the city is a must-visit. The city enjoys a four season climate and is best visited during the summer months so you can fully appreciate its attractions without having to worry about a heavy downpour of rain. Although you can reach the city by plane or bus from the major cities of China, the best and fastest way is to fly into Luoyang Beijiao Airport located about 17 kilometers from the city proper, and served by a number of carrier which links the city to Shanghai, Xian, Beijing, Guangzhou, Chongqing Shenzhen, and Urumqi.
The Longmen Grottoes, located 12 kilometers from the city, is one of the most impressive ancient ruins sites in the world. It consists of more than 2,300 caves and niches which were carved into the steep limestone cliffs that stretch for about one kilometer. The caves and niches feature 10,000 Buddhist stone statues, more than 60 stupas and 2,800 inscriptions. It was during the late 5th century and early 6th century when the caves were started to be carved. The carvings include records of treatments for various ailments and diseases, and artwork and sculptures by various artists from different periods. It is a truly amazing sight! Aside from the Longmen Grottoes, you must not miss visiting the Shaolin Temple, the birthplace of Kung fu; the White Horse Pagoda, one of the oldest Buddhist temples in the country; the Luoyang Museum of Ancient Tombs which features about 20 ancient tombs dating back to the Han and Northern Song Dynasty; and the Guanlin Temple, a combination of forest and a temple.
A world of amazing natural wonders awaits you in Luoyang. Do not forget to bring your camera and packs of batteries when you do visit the city and the Longmen Grottoes. Consult your travel agent for more details.
